SYNOPSIS: A budding filmmaker and hopeless nostalgic loses all of her life's work, along with years of treasured family photos and home movies, in a swift computer accident. While grieving the loss and seeking a way to cope, she packs a bag and sets off for Cuba, where she recovers something she never even had -- but somehow missed more than anything.
Yanis Carreto is a budding independent filmmaker from New Jersey who lost all of her life’s work, along with treasured family photos and home movies, at the crash of one faulty hard drive. She had a lengthy career in criminal investigations — and also professional acting (you would be surprised how closely these two are related) — which she left behind to fill her biggest role yet...caregiver to her aging and ailing grandparents. All the while, she wrote stories, studied filmmaking, and began taking steps toward building a new career. A career she thought ended in that one swift computer accident.
After crying her eyes out for several days, she packed a bag and set off for Cuba, to study documentary filmmaking at the world-renowned Escuela Internacional de Cine y TV (EICTV), and to track down some of those lost family memories. The end result: SAUDADE, the first short documentary film she directed and produced following the hard drive debacle of 2019. Other film projects she has worked on include: Shleep (a fashion video campaign for French fashion house Eva Ngierof), Memories of a 24 Hour Project, Big Dreams in Little Italy, Keepers of the Buttons, and Casting the Final Line — all documentary-style projects centered on nostalgic themes, as well as investigative and human interest stories.
She is also a writer, and in addition to writing scripts for film projects, she writes, photographs, and films featurettes for the blog www.HopelessNostalgic.com, where she chronicles her nostalgic adventures in travel, photography, all things vintage, and the people she meets along the way. She also uses her storytelling skills to advocate and raise awareness for irreplaceable historic, architectural, cultural, and archeological sites throughout the U.S. and the many countries she has visited.
